Question and Answer
Q. I have a cockatiel that just layed an egg a couple of days ago.She
layed it in her water dish. I took the egg and put it in the box, now
the male is trying to eat it.
Can I keep the egg and try to save it?I was wondering whats the best bird to buy and how much do they cost?
A. If the male is pecking at the eggs you need to take action and remove the offending bird from the cage. I don'treally know the cause of egg pecking. Also some birds are egg eaters and you can't help it. But what you can do from what I have heard is take an infertile egg smear it with a mixture of hot mustard and pepper, and place it in the nest. The offensive taste may cause a bird to change its ways.
Do you know if the egg is fertle? You probably need to check that.
Q. How do I know if the egg is fertile?
A. How some people tell if the egg is fertile is by shining a flashlight through the egg. A fertile egg will show redveins through the shell as they grow out around the yolk.
Infertile eggs are translucent. How-ever do not be in too much of a hurry to dispose of apparently infertile eggs- the hen may not have brooded as long as you think.
Infertile eggs also have a use in the nest: they hold warmth and offer some support for the fertile eggs.I was wondering whats the best bird to buy and how much do they cost?
Q . I was wondering whats the best bird to buy and how much do they cost?
A. If you have not had a bird before? I would
suggest a begginer bird. Which is a cockatiel or budgie.
I prefere cockatiels, they are more affectionate and bigger
than budgies.
Thier price can depend on the kind of cockatiel or budgie you buy.
The cockatiels can range from $25 to $150.
I would say you need to get one from a breeder and that
the bird is han-fed. And not from the pet store.
Q. I was wondering if cockatiels can live with budgie and can they eat the same food?A. Yes they surely can, cockatiels and budgies go along very well in a cage
and they can eat the same food.how
Q. How do I introduce a new bird to the others birds?
A. When you first get your bird you need to
quarantine the bird which means to put the bird in a room
by its self. So it can get used to its surroundings. Make
sure it is not in a place where alot of people are coming
through and making fast movments and noises that might
scare the bird. While it is by its self you need to take it
to the vet to make sure it does not have a disease that
might spred to the other bird(s). Once it as been in
quarantine for about 1 to 2 weeks you can just show it to the other birds show it to the
other birds.
What you want to do is to move the new bird and its cage into the room where
the other birds are. Then after a couple days you move the
new bird and its cage right next to the other birds cage. This way they can get used to each other without having you having to watch because they might get in a fight and if they want to check out the new bird they can walk over near it but cannot get to it. Then after a week
you can start to introducing the new bird to the others by getting them out
together and playing with them together. Once you have done
that you can put the bird in with the others.
Q. I heard that cockatiels are smelly and messy and I also heard that
females can't talk Is this true?
A. Yes, cockatiels can me messy when eating, and the food can
be thrown out of the cage especially when you have alot of birds , but if you get a seed
gaurd for your cage that would a great help. When owning an animal you have to know that thier are things you have to do for the certain animal and for a cockatiel the chore is to clean up after it.
I am not sure
about the smelly part though. If you keep your cage clean about every 4 days or
once a week is fine . And to tell you the truth their poop
(i don't want to be crude but can not think of another
referance)does not even smell. Well, maybe
smells a little but not hardly at all. So I don't think you would have a problem
with that.
